MULTICURRENCY WALLET
Western Union (via Telus Digital), 2025-2026
Western Union was evolving its Australian app from a remittance tool into a multicurrency financial platform. I designed across two phases, first adapting for the Australian market then building the wallet. What started as a local adaptation was mandated as the global design direction.
Problem
Western Union had a strong remittance presence in Australia built on access to a wider range of local banks than most competitors could offer. While that advantage held, the product stood still. The gap between what WU offered digitally and what users increasingly expected had been closing for years. Adding a multicurrency wallet wasn't optional anymore. It was overdue.
Role
I was the Senior Product Designer responsible for the end-to-end design of the remittance flow adaptations and the full multicurrency wallet experience, covering account architecture, currency management, Jars, navigation, settings and off-platform artefacts. The home screen, platform migration and cards were collaborative.
Phase 1: Adapting for market
The task wasn't to redesign the remittance flow from scratch, it was to make it feel like it was built for Australian users rather than translated for them. That meant replacing product taxonomy with user language, stripping content that assumed unfamiliarity, and making component decisions that would scale.
The design for Australian users was adopted by the Mexico market while Phase 1 was still in progress.
1.1: Domestic payments
I redesigned the domestic payments flow end-to-end, applying the same language and component simplifications made across the remittance flow. The international flow received the same treatment but shipped with the original Mexico styling due to development timeline constraints.

The MX flow asked users to "Choose how to send and pay" across labelled method fields that needed tooltips to explain. The AU version replaced the section heading, method labels and tooltips with two spatial labels: "From" and "To." The same decision with less to read.
1.2: Add money
This feature was new to WU entirely. Until this product, WU had never held customer funds. I designed the flow that made that possible for the first time.
More payment methods in Add Money made the compact list treatment more important, but it was applied consistently across all payment method selections. Same information, one line per method.

1.3: Accounts
The Mexico account screen was built for an audience that needed educating. Australian users didn't. Research showed "Wallet" didn't resonate with Australian users. "Accounts" did. Tutorials, promotional banners and a management list were competing for attention simultaneously. I stripped it back to one prioritised message at a time and moved account management to the account detail screens. The wallet icon was replaced with the currency flag, future-proofing for multicurrency.

Phase 2: Multicurrency wallet
The multicurrency wallet introduced the ability to hold, convert and move money across 30+ currencies, partition funds into named Jars with goals and target dates.
The existing app had grown without a unified visual system. Each tab had different content hierarchies, promotional content competing with functional actions, and the menu was a scrolling sitemap duplicating features already in the navigation.
Designing for multicurrency forced a rethink of how every tab presented information. Rather than propose a new system, I audited the existing components, reducing visual weight while preserving the underlying structure, and applied a consistent visual language, header treatment and component approach across all tabs.
The work received direct recognition from WU's global stakeholder, prompting the Director of Product Management to mandate the changes as the new global direction.

2.1: Settings
The Menu was restructured as a focused settings modal, giving account management a dedicated home as the product expanded. Categories were consolidated to shorten the list and improve findability. New capabilities including PayID registration and self-serve payment controls were added without disrupting that clarity.

2.2: Accounts
The accounts view moved off the tab bar and into a dedicated modal, accessible from the home screen. Currencies and Jars sit as two equal tabs, with the total balance surfaced at the top across both. Move money only appears once a Jar exists, keeping the action space uncluttered until it's relevant. The Jars empty state sets expectations before a customer commits, showing what the feature is for before they use it.

Before
Inside each account, transactions were grouped by day rather than month with continuous scrolling replacing a capped list, anticipating more frequent card spending. The header reduced in size in Phase 1 to bring transactions closer to the top, then updated to a white background in Phase 2 to align with the rest of the app.
2.3: Convert money
Convert uses CurrencyCloud for near-real-time rates, refreshing every 30 seconds throughout the flow including the review screen. Updated values load with a shimmer state in place, keeping the user in the flow without interruption. The live rate behaviour is a backend constraint; the shimmer ensures users can see when values are actively updating before they confirm.
